How could he not know? There was enough long, straight climbing to see a minute ahead. He had teammates and other riders that he could ask rather than rely on a conspiracy theory of credibility.
He knew. He got beat.
He said in a post-race interview he didn't know, and he's not saying this because he got beaten, he clearly wasn't bragging, more being confused.
The way he rode from the top to the finish already explained to me that he wasn't aware of this. If he knew, he would never have towed 3 jumbos all the way to the finish.
His riding in the last 5K was tactically very good if he just wanted to arrive ASAP in order to have those dropped as far as possible without caring for placings too much, but it was very bad if he wanted to sprint for the win. And it showed.

Evenepoel strong enough to prevent any fireworks, but not strong enough to create any separation. Jumbo get the stage and the red jersey, so they'll be happy, but no time gaps between anybody important really. Bit of a letdown after Javalambre.

The main thing now will be how Jumbo manage the red jersey being on a rider who wasn't expected pre-race, will it be like Astana '08 with Leipheimer and Contador, or will it be like Sky '11 with Froome and Wiggins, where in the end the time lost by Froome working in the red jersey on La Manzaneda (of all climbs, the one that barely averaged over 5%!!!) cost them the GC win (for eight years at least).
Sepp will lose his buffer in the ITT.

Interesting how Jumbo and UAE are in more or less the same position: Top domestique, perhaps unexpectedly, high on GC, with two leaders biding their time.

Remco did look somewhat the strongest today but I didn't see a reason for Roglic or Vingegaard to turn themselves inside out to try to gap him. I think that was Kuss's move; Remco didn't crack, so that was that. Did Remco really think he wasn't sprinting for the win? How is that possible?

Remco, Roglic, Vingegaard, Mas, Almeida, Ayuso all looking pretty equal today, honestly. Not sure what happens with Kuss ... he should be able to hold red until the Tourmalet stage. Although if he isn't feeling great, say, tomorrow, I could see Jumbo telling him to pull the plug and rest and recover.

OK...so he didn't know. That said he's racing for the best position at the finish and not worrying about the phantom rider he can't see that isn't anywhere on the GC radar. You ride to win the pack that contained all of the proximate GC riders (unless he didn't know who those guys were) because there is still bonus time unless he imagined there were 3 or more riders ahead. If he pushed a JV rider to go the front for the last km he might have had a better shot at the sprint.
He still rode an excellent stage but lost the sprint.

Why are you trying to invent something?

Remco made sure before the last curve he was in a good position, sat down on his saddle, Roglic came over him, Remco took his wheel and soft-pedalled the last 10 meters when he was sure he was in the same time as Roglic.

Remco only sprinted for not having time loss, be it in Roglic wheel or whatever wheel that guaranteed same time at the finish. Is that dumb and foolish? Yes. Because if he didn't knew if he was sprinting for the win, he should still sprint for bonus seconds e.g. if there were only 1-2 riders ahead.

In short, he rode the whole descent only for GC, not for the stage. Utterly foolish but it is what it is.

Thomas has said Roglic and Jumbo have told him there's riders ahead, when there isn't so they get the bonus seconds. Hope that wasn't the case again today as I think that's a sh!tty way to win a stage personally.
This is a race with radios. When there are no radios that might be excusable, especially on a final climb where there isn't the opportunity for the team car to give that info it's one thing, but when you can just check that with the DS, falling for that trick reflects poorly on the victim more than the perpetrator.

ah, it's okay, just delays Remco inevitably beating both merckx and pog to 50 pro wins.

bwahahaha.

You love to see it

And some tomfoolery at the end. Roglic showered Ganna

World Tour wins?

no world tour in merckx time. lol. and about 4 ITTs for every GT and a TT in every week-long race.

haters always want to shift the goalposts when confronted with unpleasant facts.

haters were in awe when pog hit 50 early this season at age 24+.

haters cannot stomach remco bettering him now (despite losing an entire year of potential wins!)

bwahahaha.
