he thought there were more than enough riders still up the road so he didn't think there were bonus seconds.
And again, it's stupid from Remco not to sprint just assuming something (better be safe than sorry), but it's quite tiring to hear the Remco haters try fill the discussion with poison, as per the reaction below

yeah sure that's poison, everyone crying excuses for why Remco got outsprinted by a guy who would outsprint him 99 times out of 100 isn't though.

hard to be as nuanced and fair as i am. people just read what they want to read.

I have to agree here. I'm 110% certain neither Rog nor Jumbo give a sh*t about any post race comments but imagine if Evenepoel was beaten by some random guy (Lenny Martinez for example) & then proceeded to say "oops, I didn't realize I was sprinting for the win!".

It doesn't say what his fans think it does (which is "my bad, I was foolish"), no, it says "I didn't really lose and this guy who beat me isn't as good as me!".

I think in this situation it's fair to say Evenepoel's comments are a bit too much. I gave this some consideration before posting (i.e. knowing all too well how touchy this sort of topic is), but come on... it's not okay to downplay someone else's win like that.

You don't get it, don't you?
This isn't about whatever place Remco got in the end (I don't care), it's about sharing with the forum he didn't realize the stage victory / bonus seconds were at stake.

If you have difficulties with this, go and see someone who can help you. If you get no help, I will, for your well-being and your living in phantasy-land, say that Remco sprinted like his life was on the line. There is not more I can do for you.

Well if Remco lovers build the guy up like he's the second coming of jesus and the road shows he's not, people that are fed up with all the rambling come out to say it. Sorry.

lol. just want him to get his fair share of accolades. he is likely to beat both merckx and Pog to 50 pro wins and yet the haters routinely comment that he is barely the belgian spilak who cannot compete with the best.

bwahahaha.

Well he does carry himself pretty high. Most riders are modest and not very outspoken. He's non of that. I don't mind it, but yeah, say it right.

FWIW and to put some oil on the fire for those who don't love Remco, in his interview he literally said: "I think I could have won"
Fanboys will bend this into: "if Remco knew this, he 100% sure would have won"
Haters will bend this into: "he doesn't respect the winner and it's low level to claim you are better and you didn't win because you didn't try"

My take is he was frustrated and everybody would feel like that. That's all there is to say.
