Kinda funny how he's just looking for low hanging fruit that you can be ok at without a FR program. Granted if Cancellara had a go it would be off his face Rominger style.

When the PR engine kicks in with "as important as the Tour" for races like Tour of California with it's 150km days and it's 2nd category climbs followed by it's 20km descents to the finish, you know someone is protesting too much. Ugh.

Cringing :
"The Tour of California was always a big goal," Wiggins told USA Today Sports during at the team's hotel base in this small city located in the Sierra Nevada foothills. "In the last six years it's gained so much curiosity, especially back in Europe," he added, referring to his only other appearance in 2008 when the race was contested in February. "As one of the biggest races in the world, guys tend to chose this now over the Giro d' Italia, which is quite something really."

Well, to be fair, I think most of us find the ToC to be quite curious too.

I think the media outlets butcher interviews more than the interviewees do, to be honest.

Wiggins now wants to do the Hour record due to the rule change and the fact that he can compare himself to Indurain. Why would a clean rider want to compare himself to a doper?

He has always had a thing about big Mig

And the fact that with the new rules he would be more or less certain to set a new record.

It's hilarious... but there's not a word which is false. It's just the combination really pushes it over the top :)

1. The TOC is probably a big intermediary goal. It's the biggest USA race and the sponsors love it. Is it a big push for his palmares? It certainly doesn't change his legacy ;)
2. I'd say it has decent European exposure being the biggest USA course. Not huge, but it makes the papers. Lovely that the 6 years mentioned exclude Leppy.
3. Riders choose the TOC over the Giro. But the innuendo that's because it's just as important is of course hilarious. Riders who choose the TOC (instead of being ordered to go there as most common domestics) choose as run up to the TdF.

Lovely indeed. I agree with you it's as much the interviewer as Wiggins. A fantastic example of "spin". *Shakes head*

Truth to be told you would think he (and FC) would crush the current Sosenk WR, so I doubt that's the whole deal.

I think it's just about the biggest thing left for him as he will never win a GT again. He would love a classic, but I'd guess indeed his best bet is PR (everything else is explosive short climbs)and that's a tall order in the twilight of his career.

IOW, I'd imagine this will be a final huzzah

It's not that they choose it over the Giro, it's that "guys tend to choose this now over the Giro d'Italia". That is clearly false. Some do prefer the Amgen Tour, but riders don't tend to do so.

Guys tend to choose it over being fired by their team managers? Guys tend to choose it as two gt's is a tall order?

Note he doesn't say how many guys or who these guys are :D

So no, it's not clearly false... it's just not exactly as how it's suggested.

He's clearly saying that riders in general prefer to ride Cali over the Giro, which is false.

Lets see the Tour of California has great hotels, great roads, small field, great food, likely good weather and a burgeoning cycling audience. compare that to Small Euro hotels where some might share a bathroom. only food of the region, narrow and crappy roads.

For many of these pros this is the best race they get to do. In fact the officials that have enough pull to affect their assignments want to do California for the same reasons. It is like a holiday in comparison to a South American race or even a race in many parts of Europe.

Add to this the stages are often shorter and for a pro California is a holiday.

Because he targets the green jersey at TdF. Can't do two GTs in a row.

I am sure he could do the Giro and still be the favourite to win the green jersey.

First time I ever heard Californian food being described as superior to Italian food.
