I completely agree. Nothing wrong with naming his idols.

It reminds me of the time people were upset Contador mentioned Lance as his childhood idol and they said he should have said Indurain  what is worse admiring dopers or lying about admiring dopers?

Who said that? Can you find the post?

I'm not making any comment on aru himself, the climb wasn't particularly fast or anything though he was very good.
But I noticed that since he woke up today he's identified pantani as his childhood hero, contador as his present one and scarponi as his mentor.

If he continues on this path of Nibali successor that he seems to be set on, dude isn't worried about what people will say in clinic threads, that's for sure
.

Indeed Hitch. Though let me clue you into something here: as an Italian he couldn't care less about what people are saying in the clinic on an anglo-cycling news site.

And do you think, again as an Italian, he's going to scorn and disavow il Panta? Contador? (Aru's roomate at this Giro is a certain Paolo Tiralonga, of whom he said was a "second father"). Scarponi? (his captain turned domestique).

For goodness sakes man, what's the lad supposed to say when asked by the Italian press who his heroes and mentors are? Coppi and Bartoli?

Being popular requires some PR. You can't just go at italian media and say Pantani was nothing cause he doped. You'd have the whole nation against you. No rational person would do that.

Italian and rational does not belong in the same sentence...:D

What a strawman:rolleyes:

How about riders who didn't build their entire careers on cheating and lies?

Aru is part of the new generation, and is the angel, he's clean! Clean I tell you! :D

Seriously though, I'm just going to enjoy his great riding this Giro. :)

1675 VAM is quite fast, still he's not even close to Lance, that's good news. :D

5.99w/kg for almost an hour in the 3rd week of a GT is not belivable for me.

I dont care if he is young and talented, he still has made a ridiculous transformation this year, and I dont buy it.

#Giro, Stage 19 (ITT). Monte Grappa (19.30 km, 7.97 %, 1538 m)
Fabio Aru: 55:04, 21.03 Kph, VAM 1676 m/h, 5.99 W/kg [DrF]

Luckily he just sat in the bunch all day yesterday and didn't spend any energy... oh wait.

I was just joking, 1675 VAM and 6w/kg for 55 minutes is pretty insane imo

Can't compare a mountain TT versus normal stages though...

I know you are probably joking but Grappa is longer, also its not as steep as ALpe so high VAM is more difficult.

The gradient for both climbs is quite similar (%8.1 vs %8) but there is definitely a big difference between 55 minutes vs 37.5 minutes effort.

He's probably cleans though
