Rujano can win this Giro, believes Savio

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he may never have ridden another GT for himself.
Probably right about Sella though.

Sella is their wisest option. He won't win the Giro but he could net a stage win from a breakaway. Prior to getting busted he was just below the top climbers at every Giro, finishing outside of the top 5 but in or around the top ten overall. If one can expect a certain progression in performance we could see him break into the top 5 if he rides a smart race. Serpa I don't think will be able to endure all the climbing and by the 3rd week will falter and drop out of the top 5 and potentially the top 10. Rujano would be better served chasing stage wins especially considering his recent time loss to his rivals.
Has anyone determined if his time loss was due to a crash or mechanical or was he simply dropped?

No, it's not. He was 13th in the atypical, less mountainous 2009 Giro.

No other top-25 GT results.

I agree with will10 - Sella is their best bet, IMO.

wow, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. serpa has been a helper in every giro he ever rodem, including 2009 when he started as a helper for scarponi but in the end could go for himself and finishes 11. serpa could do top ten if all is well and sella never can unless he gets big time in breaks. selal is very overrated here. before he found cera he was a little above average italian climber that in much weaker fields could do a top 15 at best

still rujano will be their best bet for gc as even with 5 minutes down he will do better than anyone else at androni in the mountains if his mind is straight.

Sella has been climbing well this year, though...

Rujano hasn't been too visible this year. Could just sensibly have ridden a light schedule before a very hard Giro, but then he was at Trentino and didn't look fantastic.

Fair enough, but just going by past performances (i.e. only the (IMO, atypical) 2009 Giro) a top 10 is not very likely. He lost several minutes on the Blockhaus climb, for example. Did good on shorter climbs.

But yeah... I was probably jumping to conclusions. He seems to have improved considerably since then. Don't know about the high mountains, though. We'll see.

+1.

Sella and Serpa have been more impressive. Unless Rujano is riding like Sastre (Under the Radar) which we have seen examples of this in the past. We have never seen Rujano doing the same thing as Sastre.

He was 13th. 12th after Di Luca was disqualified.

I think he fell outside the top ten due to a poor TT in the last stage.

Incorrect.

I could have sworn that he was 11th. Maybe I was thinking of something else.

Well, thanks.

These classifications can get crazy when we take into account the doping disqualifications of other riders.

Um... well... no comment. I'm a huge fan of Sella. I'll withold judgment until after this Giro. :D

I don't want Contador to lose, but it would be nice if he wasn't the best climber in a GT for a change. I can dream, though, right?

Well, the Giro of 2008. But that one was a bit of a joke. Still don't understand how Contador managed to win that one(yeah I know bc of time trials, rhetorical)

I think the Giro dell Cera is a better name for what we saw there.

so how do you know you saw something different in 2002,2004,2006,or in 2010 where the average speed was the 3rd highest in giro history despite one of the most mountainous route in history? i bet this year we'll have even more fun than in 2008.

let's just say that sella will crack alberto on zoncolan :D now that will kill these forums for ever.vola sella!!!

average speeds don't say anything.

A stage filled with attacks can result in lower average speeds even though it was more brutal on the legs.

Absolutely true.

Stop/attack effect is more punishing than constant high pace. So average's indeed don't say everything.

Also the weather plays a big role. A few stages with fierce headwind on the final climb can kill...
