You're just jealous! Fly over here next time it snows and we will throw you in it, too!

We have a small pond in the backyard with some fish in it. It is so cold here that the pond has frozen over, but the fish still swim around under the ice.

Kitty has discovered she can now walk on water! Today we watched her jumping and sliding around on the ice, trying to catch those fish. She just couldn't understand why she could see them but not catch them!

another cat story

So, about 3 weeks ago, a few days after our first real snow I went out for my morning ride. There was about 10-12 inches on the ground (25-30cm), maybe 10F below freezing. In other words, pretty nice weather.

About 3-4 miles from town with snow covered fields on one side of the road and woods on the other I see something right next to the road. It looked like a kitten burrowed into the snow. I stopped. It was a kitten. When I reached down to see if it was alive it took off at top speed into the woods and deep snow. I figured it either got lost before the storm or someone dumped it off after the storm. People. I couldn't catch it so I decided to bring some cat food back and put it in the trees next to the road. Rode home, came back and there it was again huddled into the snow. Cutting to the chase, I managed to corner her in a sort of den made by snow drifting over a big rock. I lost blood and a pair of gloves were shredded in the capture. Got her back, set up a temporary home in a corner of the brewhouse (thank god no inspectors came by) and began to get her adapted. Took her to the vet for shots, have gotten her introduced to the resident house cat "Pete" and things are going well. She romps around, bites his tail, he growls and bats her back... they seem to be working things out.

We think we'll call her "Lucky".

Have a Happy New Year All

What a pretty cat!

We have had more snow lately, so the ice on the pond is covered. This means Kitty prances out on the ice to look around and sees -- nothing! Then she gets this very confused look on her face as if to say, "But I was SURE that there was something here to go after...."

On a ride last week one of those totally annoying little white dogs on a yo-yo leash ran all the way out into the road and I had to swerve way into the other lane to avoid it. If there'd been a car coming I would have been forced, or rather, given an excellent excuse, to kill it. I've been bitten on the calf once during a ride, thrown away a few water bottles hitting attacking dogs, and once my brother-in-law broke a very nice Silca pump over the head of an attacking lab. I don't like dogs.

i broadsided a lab and went over the handle bars and broke an arm.

got high sided in a skid caused by avoiding a black lab and still have the scar over one eye.

twice i've turned the chaser into the chasee.

i once ended the bike chasing career of a big mean farm dog with a spray bottle of ammonia cleaner.

i have a dog that is NEVER off the leash outside the fenced in yard. he's a good enough dog but i prefer the 2 cats.

am i the only rider here who's had trouble with dogs?

What is remarkable is when a dog does NOT chase a bike. But this is a cat thread. Why not start a dog thread?

Does anybody feed their cat a raw food diet? Is it a hassle? I have a 26 pound cat that looks like a furry bean bag with legs.

I have done in the past for animals with allergies etc.. They will get extra protein though from eating raw meat so theres that..

Chicken just minced up in a blender works pretty well, its high protein and low fat..

Main thing to avoid is carbs.. they cannot process them which is what makes them fat.

It's not a hassle if you buy the frozen raw meals. :)

The "raw food kits" are not bad either. Raw meat + mix + (sometimes) liver and oil capsules It can then be frozen in serving size amounts, so you can make quite a lot infrequently.

Personally I would not try making my own from scratch. Although I suppose it is not much different than making anything else in the kitchen, I would worry about whether there was too much calcium or not enough taurine or not enough of something else.
