Annoying that they can ride in the gutter for a big part of the Libby Hill climb. Should be blocked with sod.

It is not a big problem. The gutter will make it disadvantageous to ride on the cobbles so the peloton will stretch even more. For example Taaienberg without the gutter would be probably less selective than it is now.

In the video Cassani is saying that he thinks that they'll put up barriers to avoid that, but it's not a big problem, I have to agree with Togo.

I am surprised at the French squad. How can they go with Bouhanni and Demare after FDJ took Bouhanni out of the French Nationals?
FDJ definitely appears to have gone with the wrong guy. Démare has been awful this year and doesn't even have illness or injury as an excuse. Ok, maybe awful is a tad strong but it's certainly been his worst season by far since his neo-pro year.

Germany:

Road race:

John Degenkolb (26/Gera), Johannes Fröhlinger (30/Gerolstein), Simon Geschke (29/Berlin/alle Giant-Alpecin), Andre Greipel (33/Rostock/Lotto-Soudal), Christian Knees (34/Bonn/Sky), Paul Martens (31/Rostock/Lotto-NL Jumbo), Tony Martin, Marcel Sieberg (33/Castrop-Rauxel/Lotto-Soudal), Paul Voss (29/Rostock/Bora Argon 18)

Tony Martin doesn't need a birthplace. He is Tony Martin.

German engineering at its finest. Rumour has it that the engineers responsible for Panzerwagon went on to invent something even better a few years later - Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo :eek:

After watching the video I'm thinking of someone who can still be punchy to hammer it hard after a long race. Van Avermaet would be my choice.

Edit: I forgot an hidden climb. Makes it a little harder.

1 = E-main street. 6% for 350 m. Not cobbled.
2 = Libby Hill Park. 7.6 % for 250 m. Cobbled.
3 = 23rd Street. 11% (20% max) for 100 m. Was partly cobbled, but now fully cobbled.
4 = Governor Street. 6,9% for 290 m. Not cobbled.

Governor street is only 7%? Very different to how it's made out on the website then, I got 40m (from the profile) gained over 300m. 23rd Street is going to hurt the pure sprinters but this looks perfect for Degenkolb/Kristoff/Sagan.

Thanks, I'd seen that but couldn't work out which way round they were going and it seems Governor Street isn't the official name of the road. Does the climb start straight from the from the right hander?

Someone wanted the profile up thread, see if this works:

Road-Circuit-Elevation-Map.gif

It worked!

If this is true:

"A quick descent, followed by three hard turns leads to a 100-meter-long climb up 23rd Street. Once atop this steep cobbled hill, riders descend into Shockoe Bottom. This leads them to the final 300-meter-long climb up Governor Street. At the top, riders face a 680-meter false flat to the finish."

Based on that profile it's about a 12-13% climb. Looking at the route I can't tell if they have to turn into it or they'll hit it at full speed. Anyone know?
A short video of Cassani talking about the circuit, even if you don't understand Italian it's interesting because you can see all the climbs and the whole circuit.

Brilliant, thanks! That should answer any questions I have.

If you look at the Street View you can see the right hander onto Governor Street is somewhere before the middle of that last rise, so the 300 m at 7% is not for the whole ascent just the second part on Governor Street. Overall it's something like 700 m at 5.5% I think.

If Degenkolb is strong enough to attack on Governor Street, then he should be able to compete with Kristoff in the potential sprint as well. I doubt he will have the power to do either though.

Degenkolb or Kristoff for me. The only way someone else is getting it (a Belgian) is if they really make it a hard race AND they can actually work together.

Outside change for a guy like Stybar managing to get a gap and no-one chasing in the confusion, seems unlikely though.

I hope there is a chance that an elite group will form a strong break. Terpstra, Vanmarcke, Vandenberg, Trentin, Boonen, Boom, Stannard and perhaps Dumoulin would make a dangerous cocktail.

Germany and Norway should be forced to do most of the chasing.

They should be forced to but no doubt GB will do it all for them...

Slovakia

Peter Sagan
Juraj Sagan
Michal Kolář

Slovakia is 20 points short to have the fourth man in the squad.

Sagan (in form of the first week of Tour) could me the man to beat here, even without the strong team. However at this time of season he is usually only the shadow of summer Sagan.
Let us see how the new team can prepare him for WC and Il Lombardia

Just checked the odds at the sportsbook at Betfair, and I am very surprised that they hold Sagan as the favourite. Kristoff, Degenkolb and van Avermaet follows. Also noted that no italians are lower than 40/1 :)
