Haven't a clue who will lead team GB

Cav and G. I suspect the former will be nowhere to be seen when the real thing starts.

edit: Oh, just read Thomas isn't racing.
And Cav is struggling

If Cav isn't 100% then GB should just call up the twins and get them to try and go with late attacks if the race splits up, I don't rate Cav's chances anyway.

The Yates didn't seem surprised not to be selected. Said there are better riders than them. Too humble.

That should have been Plan A. Pinning their hopes on a Cav train with a tired Thomas as their backup was stupid.

At least you can count on the Yates to finish, hopefully they're allowed to do their own thing.

Road race:

John Degenkolb (26/Gera), Johannes Fröhlinger (30/Gerolstein), Simon Geschke (29/Berlin/alle Giant-Alpecin), Andre Greipel (33/Rostock/Lotto-Soudal), Christian Knees (34/Bonn/Sky), Paul Martens (31/Rostock/Lotto-NL Jumbo), Tony Martin, Marcel Sieberg (33/Castrop-Rauxel/Lotto-Soudal), Paul Voss (29/Rostock/Bora Argon 18)

Time Trial:

Nikias Arndt (23 Jahre/Buchholz/Giant-Alpecin), Tony Martin (30/Cottbus/Etixx-Quick Step)

I'm surprised Spain didn't choose Rojas... Glad to see that Plaza is in the squad.

Italy's squad is super strong, riders such as Viviani, Felline and Trentin are all on super form currently. The latter two are so dangerous because of their sprinting skills and ability to infiltrate breakaways.

Tony Martin doesn't need a birthplace. He is Tony Martin.

Someone wanted the profile up thread, see if this works:

Road-Circuit-Elevation-Map.gif

It worked!

If this is true:

"A quick descent, followed by three hard turns leads to a 100-meter-long climb up 23rd Street. Once atop this steep cobbled hill, riders descend into Shockoe Bottom. This leads them to the final 300-meter-long climb up Governor Street. At the top, riders face a 680-meter false flat to the finish."

Based on that profile it's about a 12-13% climb. Looking at the route I can't tell if they have to turn into it or they'll hit it at full speed. Anyone know?

Cycling Ireland are only sending two of the three riders they are entitled to send to the men's elite RR. They are sending nobody to to the TT at all. The men's team consists of Sam Bennett (Bora) and Conor Dunne (An Post). In the women's categories, they are also leaving numerous slots unfilled.

It's a ridiculous decision, which should seriously irritate Bennett as well as the numerous Conti riders who'd have loved the opportunity to ride the WC fetching bottles. The WT riders apparently don't want to go.

It seems that these days, Cycling Ireland is only interested in spending its limited budget on the minor irrelevance that is track racing.

Moreno Moser for the TT??? At Vuelta TT 121st, at Tour de Pologne TT 109th (with 113 starters), at Tour de Suisse TT 111th (with 120 starters), is the worst choice possible for Italy, a challenger for the last position. It's true they have only Malori that could compete with the best time trialists but with someone like Quinziato, Bennati, Boaro, Oss or Fellinme almost a place between 7/8 and 15 it's possible.

Edit: I forgot an hidden climb. Makes it a little harder.

1 = E-main street. 6% for 350 m. Not cobbled.
2 = Libby Hill Park. 7.6 % for 250 m. Cobbled.
3 = 23rd Street. 11% (20% max) for 100 m. Was partly cobbled, but now fully cobbled.
4 = Governor Street. 6,9% for 290 m. Not cobbled.

The last climb is the street above where it says Shockoe Slip on the map

A short video of Cassani talking about the circuit, even if you don't understand Italian it's interesting because you can see all the climbs and the whole circuit.

Nice video! To me it seems a very technical parcours. Hills are (very) short, but doing it again and again will be hard.

In addition to the post by Velolover2, hill #3 is 're-paved' with cobbles over the whole climb. see the latest street view.
