Two things can happen simultaneously today:

- a breakway goes and Remco leaves the pink
- Remco tries to gain more second on the direct rivals on the last climb

If you can take time, it would be stupid not to.
If you can't take time, it would be stupid to keep trying and wasting energy.

So if he feels good, let him try and see what it gives.

he always wants to, I think, and Lodewyck said "Maybe Remco will feel very good tomorrow [today] and the competition a little less. Then there's always the chance to take some seconds. I think that Remco is doing well, and the competition maybe slightly less so."

So it doesn't really sound like the team will hold him back.
If the others really allow breaks to go so the likes of Buitrago get back within 1 minute of the pink jersey. To create a situation where Quick Step has to work alone all day, Evenepoel is isolated on Crans Montana & Monte Bondone and later on they attack him left and right on Giau, like Ullrich was on Galibier... Then Evenepoel better gets that precious seconds today. They could be useful in the end.

A test for Remco? It is a test for the rest to see if they can keep up with Remco, not the other way around. He is the last Grand Tour winner and he is the last climbing monument winner.

Yup, we will see if Remco can climb like real men in the Giro mountains or if he's just a low CdA merchant (aka the Bullet Man). Even Pog & Vinge fear real climbs of the Giro.

Soudal may want to leave this stage to the break but Jumbo, Ineos and UAE if they are serious about trying to win this race should be forcing Remco to hold onto pink and make it another GC day. If both he and Soudal as a team are still strong enough to hold onto the jersey every day for 3 weeks well then he is a machine and will have earned it.

There are some very fine climbers, that could easily end up in the top 5 as this is still a mountain-heavy Giro, thinking about Jay Vine, Jay Hindley, Vlasov, Hart. Those are not necessarily ending up higher in GC, but while they are close in GC, they are contenders and should be kept at a thight leash. I'm not sure if e.g. Roglic AND Evenepoel can follow all of those (supposed they are in their best shape) in the high mountains.
Roglic and Evenepoel are the best climbers. Again, the question is which other climbers will be able to keep up with Remco and Roglic, not the other way around. Remco and Roglic are better climbers than Vine, Hindley, Vlasov and Hart.

This is very screwed up logic. The next two days will be a sprint. Soudal doesn't have to work. So, I doubt the rivals will work all day to keep the pink jersey on Remco.

I think this is by far the best scenario for Remco; ship the jersey but take time on GC. I think if he's feeling good he has to stick the knife in when/if he can; you cannot waste this kind of form riding conservatively. That said the false flat to the finish really suits him if he can get through the top of the climb with a gap and theoretically could take a nice chunk of time today without trying to be a hero too early. Team strategy will be very important; I really hope multiple teams decide to make it a hard day. I personally really like this profile and think we're in for some great racing.

My BIG wish for this stage is we see there are other riders with the form and belief to bring some fight to Remco and Rog....

;)

There are not so few people around that believe Van Aert is a GC rider so I couldn't guess if you were joking of not...

I think the breakaway should take this but I believe Remco will stay in pink at the end of the stage as out of all stages in this Giro its the one that resembles Pico Jano stage the most, even the weather should be similar, so I think he will attack in the last climb with only Vine and Hart being able to follow him. Roglič and Almeida will arrive some 20-30 seconds back with Vlasov and Thomas will lose close to a minute.

I would think the best move in either scenario is Soudal just letting the break grab pink.

I am not 100% sure Roglic and Evenepoel will outclimb guys like Vine or Vlasov in the queen stage (or better: stages). Those are climbs that Remco hasn't faced before, and while Roglic has a more proven track record of Alpine giants, the last time he could show to the world he was climbing with the best on climbs above 2000 meters that are reasonably steep (so no Sierra Nevada gradients), was...? 2020?

Vallter 2000 at Catalunya? 2150m at the summit, 12.1k at 7.3%.

It's time! For everyone to go in the break.

Quickstep already put someone to follow the attacks. Remco giving the jersey away, to a teammate.
