My next pick is Tonkov, but it's difficult for me to pick a year. Even though he won in '96 he didn't seem as impressive as in '97, and then there's '98 where he wasn't far of Pantani. Ofc there's also the 50% rule to consider, but judged by the little info I have found of climbing times it doesn't seem like it affected him.

I will do my real post selection him in some time, but until then this is so burning know what he has to pick between.

I know another Giro winner has been hinted at, but I think Tonkov is going to fit better in on my team, not that I know who of them was best.

Tonkov definitely better than any Giro winner not already picked. I wanted him for next round! The 1998 Giro is the best, he almost matched Pantani and won the stage to Alpe di Pampeago with the super hard final part.

I like the picture of the '95 Vuelta podium. Will someone pick him?
Yes, in a DS bonus round.

Good pick Netserk, Tonkov was one of the guys that I was thinking about, a great pick in the 3rd round! I'd also pick the 1998 version, he was a beast on Alpe di Pampeago and did something like 6.53 W/kg for 50 min on Montecampione when Pantani destroyed him.

Great pick. Also, Tonkov owns the super-mutant record on the Lagos de Cavadonga climb, 40" faster than Jaja/Zulle. Something like 480 watts.

There's a certain italian cyclist who should've gone a long time ago that I think people have forgotten about. :D

Gratz to whoever picks him up !

I have a feeling we're thinking of the same guy. Bit surprised netserk didn't go for him if he wants to cause some carnage in the mountains.

Really enjoying the draft and each 'Director's' reasoning behind their picks.
Would enjoy it after you're done if you put up a poll to see whose team is deemed the dopest.
I agree with your excellent idea.
And I agree with your opinion.

This is a truly enjoyable way to discuss doping.

You guys need to pick faster, though. There are still a bunch of riders that I am hoping to see make it on to someone's team.

Dave.

Re:

My next pick is The Tsar Pavel Tonkov and I choose his '98 Giro form.

After having won the race in '96 and leading for most of it in '97 while winning three stages, he was the closest rival to Pantani in the 1998 Giro and while he was defeated, he delivered several very impressive performances. He won on Pampeago (only a few seconds slower than Pantani was next year while slaughtering everyone) and did his best to stick to Pantani on Montecampione, but lost nearly a minute, though still far ahead of the next riders. In the Vuelta the year before he won two mountain stages and sat the record on mythical Lagos de Covadonga before heading home to his newborn son. He is also an excellent TTer and should definitely be able to set a very hard pace on the penultimate climb of the day.

I select "The Cobra" Riccardo Ricco, 2008 Tour de France

His two incredible stage wins at the 2008 Tour de France will always be remembered, if only because he later tested positive for CERA and had his entire team thrown out of the race. From his incredible uphill sprint at Super Besse to his insane motorbike attack on the Col d'Aspin that made everyone else look like they were nailed to the ground, he was so obviously doped to the gills that riders were actually contesting 2nd place on stages where he was already clear for the stage win (Efimkin on stage 9 oddly attacked before the finish to pick up a measly 13 seconds, which was weird at the time, but now he's listed as the official stage winner). A completely fearless climber, he will hunt for stage wins early in the race if there happens to be a short and steep climb that suits him and then support Pantani in the mountains by attacking from far out to take the pressure off of the rest of the team and who knows, maybe just win the race himself.

Round 1

Pick 1: Libertine Seguros - Miguel Indurain ('95 Tour)
Pick 2: The Hitch - Lance Armstrong ('04 Tour)

Pick 13: Zam Olyas - Tony Rominger ('95 Giro)
Pick 14: Netserk - Piotr Ugrumov ('94 Tour)

Pick 24: Netserk - Pavel Tonkov ('98 Giro)
Pick 25: burning - Gilberto Simoni ('03 Giro)
Pick 26: zlev11 - Riccardo Ricco ('08 Tour)
Pick 27: The Green Monkey -
Pick 28: The Sceptic -
Pick 29: The Hitch -
Pick 30: Libertine Seguros -

I was wondering how early Riccò would go. Widely regarded as the cleanest Tour of the era we're looking at, due mainly to AFLD actually caring about catching dopers, but Riccardo just stood out like a sore thumb with his fearless CERA-fuelled antics. His motorbike-blast past de la Fuente and Arroyo on the Col d'Aspin is hilarious to this day.

With my pick I am going to select the winner of the 1997 and 1999 Giro, Ivan Gotti.

I have no idea which year Gotti was stronger, or even if I am making a good selection at all, but I will go with 1997 when he beat Tonkov by not much but was a long way ahead of anyone else (although that might only be because the competition was weak, it does not look like a strong top 10).
