Question for the USA legal-eagles here:
If one were to observe a person receiving a Grand Jury subpoena, and Grand Jury proceedings being considered secret, would the press be obligated NOT to report on it?
Obviously they reported on observed situations of witnesses emerging from the Armstrong GJ.
Looking for legal reasons why the media might be so quiet on this issue.
Legal-shmeegal.
Look at it from the perspective of someone trying to make a living as a reporter, perhaps cycling is one of her beats. Let's say our intrepid reporter has fantastic luck and is there at the scene.
She's got a story no one in the cycling media will print for fear of advertisers leaving. She's got a story no one in mainstream media cares about. The story won't get bought and she won't give it away to NYVelocity because she's got to eat.
Our intrepid reporter has credentials for ToC. No one at the UCI or Anschutz wants the story mentioned. No bad stories allowed. Pursuing it is breaking the attempt at suspension of reality. Worse than that our intrepid reporter is now viewed inside cycling media as "hostile" if she pursues this any more.
No one from professional media is going to be the Fourth Estate at a very minor event. BTW, the cyclingnews people do as well as can be expected in this regard.
