Plenty of time to fix it after the crash, if only their teammates had been where they should.

And the Orica riders mostly were where they should.

Yup, the weird thing is that before the flag dropped at the start there were about five Sky riders right at the front with Froome and then they just disappeared with Froome dropping back to the last third of the peloton. It wouldn't have happened if Froome had been in the leader's jersey and I think it was just complacency, thinking that it was Movistar's job to control the early attacks and not considering the possibility they would be in the attack themselves following Contador.

I've seen some people suggest that Sky will get their ''revenge'' in the stages to come but there's no way Movistar are going to make an error like that with Quintana in the lead.

At 106,4 kilometres to go for Quintana/Contador group, Froome's 25 seconds behind, constantly losing time for a couple of kilometres. He's communicating via radio, requesting speeding up. A minute behind (him) is a large group led by Sky quartet.
At that point, DS should have ordered Froome to wait for the quartet and then organise the chase together with Orica.
Maybe the breakaway would have still succeeded, but it was on DS to manage the situation in a way that would give his team leader the best chance and calm him down.
100 kilometres...

Hard one to call but I think Froome should have waited for his other team-mates. Danger is though that the Movistar and Tinkoff boys in Froome's group push on and link up with the Contador/Quintana group.

For all the discussion of the team's shortcomings today, none of this would have happened if Froome was on Quintana's wheel. He has to take a large chunk of the responsibility. Anyway, it's a learning experience for next year's Tour probably

Yeah I agree. The crash that caused the split was unfortunate but you can argue he should have been in front of it anyway on Quintana's wheel. He made the big effort to bridge on the climb and probably wanted to save some energy by starting the descent towards the back of that front group. Still, it all comes back to being too far down in the peloton in those first few km's. It's not really a learning experience as he's experienced enough to know where he should be. Just a bit of complacency and I guess it's understandable after winning the Tour. Most riders in his shoes wouldn't even be at the Vuelta!
Most in his shoes wouldn't ? The big three have made it quite clear the last few years they would be going to veulta even if they win the tour

It's known as the big 4 isn't it? Did Nibali ride the Vuelta in 2014?

Castelli kit next year.
Are we going to get something like this? :surprised:

Re: Team Sky Discussion thread

Also they will want to change design as it will get a lot of people to buy the new kit. If it's too similar why would you buy it again?
I think they should go the Training top Blue they have

It would be fun if, having dragged the peloton towards black, Sky changed colour. I think they look good with white a la Kennaugh's national jersey but without stripes obviously, or the blue training kit they have.
I think there is a slight chance they change to white. White with blue and maybe black accents, like the Adidas kit in reverse

So definitely saying Sky good bye...and it even rhymes :) Despite Sky wanted to keep him.

One of the best riders on their roster and potential GT leader down.

But a pretty awful domestique and I don't think he has the level required to win a grand tour (certainly not against the best guys).

If Sky wanted to keep him then that suggests there is still some money to spend to find a replacement (someone better than Kenny bloody Elissonde!).

Are you referring to König?

When you think about it SKY have a strong enough roster in 2017 to win all 3 grand Tour

nealry 2 in 2016 and most of the top riders were sick or injured

Landa has been sick or injured most of the year
Inxtausti sick all year
Kwaito sick on and off
Henao suspened for part and injured for part
Roche sick on and off most of the year
Konig nijured most of the year

Yet they still managed to field a great team at most races....only maybe the Vuelta team was a let down

So if the the above 1st four can be injury free next year SKY will be hard to beat (even if they sign no more Doms)

Giro = Landa , Inxtausti, Nieve, Lopez, Seb Henao, Boswell, Deignan, Kennaugh Viviani
Tour =Froome, Poels, Thomas, Nieve, Henao , Rowe, Stannard, Kiryenka, Kwaitoski
Vuelta = Froome, Landa, Inxtausti, Henao, Lopez, Thomas, Knees, Puccio, Kiryenkia

People often don't realise the Rapha Sky kit is made alongside Nalini, Adidas Cycling & AGU brands in MOAs factory. Castelli is no different. Castelli haven't existed in terms of a company with a factory since the 90's. Castelli is just an old brand name bought out during the big decline of lots of traditional Italian cycling brands folding in the 90's. Castelli is owned and manufactured by Manifattura Valcismon who also make Sportful & Karpos clothing.

Re: Team Sky Discussion thread

On paper it's been a good year:

4th Tour win
First monument win (and 2 other monument podiums)
4th Paris-Nice and 5th Dauphine win
Good Vuelta with 2nd on GC and 3 stage wins
Giro was nearly a complete disaster but saved by Nieve

I can't help but feel the talent on the roster was capable of much more though and the inconsistency that has blighted the team was shown with Landa's failure at the Giro and the team's ***-up (and startlist) at the Vuelta.

Good year:

Froome
Poels
Nieve
Sergio Henao
Moscon
Stannard
Rowe
Van Poppel

Ok year:

Thomas (it started great but post Paris-Nice was pretty disappointing)
Viviani
Roche
Lopez
Kennaugh
Puccio
Knees
Golas
Boswell
Nordhaug
Seb Henao
Swift
Kiryienka (could be poor year if he doesn't perform at worlds)

Poor year:

Landa
Kwiatkowski
Intxausti
Konig
Zandio
Fenn
Deignan
Peters

Are Deignan , Feen and Peters staying at SKY ?

Would like to see Thomas target PR and RVV and forget stage racing ...just be ready for Dauphine, Tour .etc
Also Moscon is a real find for classic races
Kwait will need to shape up for Classics or he is out ...Brailsford is not sentimental
Stanard and Rowe will do well with maybe Rowe stepping up

Landa will have to perfrom in the Giro or he too is gone....SKY can afford alot of Doms for what they pay him

Froomes team at the Vuelta will need ot come with their A game

That should produce a better year

Deignan has a contract for 2017, yes. Fenn is rumoured to be leaving. Peters was a neo-pro this year so he has a contract for next year. Not sure what's happened to him since the nationals.

Moscon could be a real star. Sky's cobbles squad is looking very promising but I can't see any of them beating both Sagan and GVA at Flanders for instance. Roubaix will be their best chance.
